Mv-55 guidance! Tube Rolling and Triode/Pentode

Post by henry9731 »

Hello! Just got into the CJ club! First unit, Mv-55.

Got a few questions and hopefully you guys could help me out.

I would like to ask if tube rolling would make a noticeable change to the sound profile? I hope to have a fuller bass and mid range. Current sound is very delicate. Female vocals and strings sounds suburb! But I hope to have more “energy” and punch. (I mainly listen to [symphonic] metal like Epica) Should I be looking for the 12ax7, or the 6sn7?

Also I wonder if there is anyway i could check if my unit in running in Pentode or Triode mode? Do I have to open up the unit?

Speakers: PMC Twenty22
Pre-Amp: Holo Bliss
DAC: Holo Cyan 2

I’m moving from a headphones setup to speakers, so some of the gears here are double functional.

Welcome to CJO, great to have you with us.

I'm a fellow MV-55 owner. There is a number of threads on CJO here on the MV-55 so I would look at those. I've never tube rolled mine as it was a relatively recent purchase and happened after the Ukraine conflict started and tube prices shot to the moon. When (if) they come down in price again I may try some of that but not right now.

I see you also have some Holo gear. I have the Holo Audio May KTE edition DAC as well.

Again, welcome to CJO.

Hello! Thanks for the warm welcome!

Yea, I have been digging the mv-55 posts a lot, and are a bit confused too, especially the one who asked for a 16ohm mod.
Do I need to do a 8ohm mod for optimal performance?

Ah yes the May! I have the Holo Spring 2 KTE use on another set-up (my dad's set up with the Ls3/5a), just happens that the Cyan 2 suites me better as I mainly listen to metal.

Very cool. Not a lot of audiophiles that are primarily into metal, but that's awesome.

As for the resistance setting. The MV-55 will handle 8 ohm speakers such as you PMC's without issue. Of course, if you want to experiment on trying to change the settings you can. I can't say whether the sound would be any better (or worse). The MV-55 is rather robust so will handle just about any speaker, and the higher the resistance the easier it should be to drive. In other words, you should be fine as is.
