Sheffield Lab Direct to Disc listing
Sheffield Lab Direct to Disc listing
Had a couple of these for years and tried them out on CJ system. Certainly sound way better now than years ago on inferior systems
These have to be the nearest thing to being there.
Don't understand the current fixation of R2R Tapes when these are available?
Started picking up some more including the Drum record and a couple of Harry James to add to existing Lincoln Mayorga III and Thelma Houston pressure Cooker.
One box has an early listing of releases, hope this helps

Re: Sheffield Lab Direct to Disc listing
Will have to check some of these out.
As for the obsession of R2R. I think there a few holdouts but they are a rare breed. I remember seeing some company selling high quality R2R recordings at something like $300 per album. No thank you.

Re: Sheffield Lab Direct to Disc listing
Many are actually quite a bit more than $300.
The most expensive I've seen was $1.500 but I have no idea how high it really goes. Most appear to be from $500 to $1,000.

Re: Sheffield Lab Direct to Disc listing
Well, if I ever think about getting a R2R player, I will just come back here so that I can quickly talk myself out of it!
Yeah, that seems absolutely crazy. Not sure how they justify the price as the R2R tape itself is not that expensive to produce.

Re: Sheffield Lab Direct to Disc listing
You're right -- you have to wonder how they can justify the astronomical prices. Granted, it's a niche market but still...

Re: Sheffield Lab Direct to Disc listing
Since the original post I have gone a bit mental, in looking for, and buying the other early releases,
Price seems good value at around UK £20.

Re: Sheffield Lab Direct to Disc listing
My personal cutoff considering a purchase for a single album is around $30. I just can't really justify spending more, especially these days when there is more music available to stream (essentially free) than I have time to listen.

Wow. Building a very nice collection there. How have the prices been? I know we discussed that earlier in the thread.

Re: Sheffield Lab Direct to Disc listing
Most of the early Vinyl £10-£30 Highest paid was £45 for the Drum Record on Vinyl.
The later Vinyl TLP26 onwards are £75-£250
So most of my later ones are bought on CD for £10-£20
Just bought the last one needed CD28 so will stop there.

Re: Sheffield Lab Direct to Disc listing
I bought most of these as they were released.
It was fun to collect them.
I bought my first LP12 after starting the collection. The LP12 gurus in the UK thought they (and all other audiophile records) were horrible. I remember a story from a show where some fellow brought his favorite and asked to hear it on the latest gear. The story varies … it might have been Ivor, or Colin, or maybe someone else. Whoever it was, he took the disk, looked at the label, commented “you should bin this one,” and pitched it like a frisbee to the far side of the auditorium.
In hind sight, I don’t play any of these very often (really only when someone else wants to hear one). When I do play them, I am far more sensitive to the pressure on the performers and cutting crew. There is a tension that I sense, and it grates on me.

It’s just stuff. I like mine. I hope you like yours. I probably like yours too.
