Re: Hickok 752A tube tester with manual and data books
So I definitely don't need this as I don't have that many spare tubes, but it's so cool. AJ, how difficult/complex is the operation. Do you really have to have a lot of knowledge to take meaningful measurements or is it pretty "simple?" Are the instructions geared to somebody that may not know that ...

Re: HumminGuru GH-1 LPs cleaner...a jewel to use.
I was pleased to see that Roberto has rekindled his interest in vinyl. A record cleaning machine is really a “must have” item, and the one shared here looks like a very nice value. I recently traded my Kirmus and my VPI MW-1 to acquire a Clearaudio Dual Matrix Pro Sonic. It can be used either aut ...

Re: CJ Classic 62SE w/EL34 vs McIntosh MC275MKVI?
I have nothing to say about the proposed comparison. But the current version of the MC275 is a seriously good amp, and it will pair synergistically with your current version of the C22. I owned the original versions of both, and the current versions are very capable, bullet proof, and will hold ...

Re: Hickok 752A tube tester with manual and data books
I thought I’d give this a “bump.” FWIW, I have abandoned all interest in testing tubes. I still have an ARC Phono 3SE that uses tubes, but I am looking at and auditioning SS phono preamps, like Burmester’s. I would let this unit go for $300 plus actual shipping cost. It’s a shame for it to sit in my ...

Why don’t I quit being negative?
It is a good question. Obviously RJ acts as a foil. And I suspect that admin is frustrated by my sharing negative feelings. I post out of a sense of guilt. I spent years carrying water for CJ. Over and over I defended their approach. Unlike RJ and admin, I bought many new CJ pieces through dealers ...

Re: Amplifier Advice
Unless you get to test drive the Ferrari in juxtaposition to the Aston Martin, you will have no basis for deciding that you like to drive one more than the other. You can make it up in your head, and obsess over the one you’re day dreaming about, but that’s a virtual reality. I am not criticizing CJ ...

Re: Amplifier Advice
It is another of the small time “out of house” dealers. If you’re willing to deal with such, give him a call. I had a transaction with him several years ago (well before Covid). It went smoothly. The item was drop shipped from Fairfax. I rolled the dice because I still was “in love” and it was “a goo ...

Re: Amplifier Advice
Living in Arizona, the only real dealer Mark with Reno HIFI retired, unfortunately no place to demo a CJ amp. Regards... Sadly, this is the rule, not the exception. It is virtually impossible to audition CJ side by side against other brands. Or, for that matter, against another CJ model. There is a ...

Re: Sheffield Lab Direct to Disc listing
I bought most of these as they were released. It was fun to collect them. I bought my first LP12 after starting the collection. The LP12 gurus in the UK thought they (and all other audiophile records) were horrible. I remember a story from a show where some fellow brought his favorite and asked to ...

FWIW, listen before you buy if you can.
Lots of gushing by current or past owners is worth about 2% of a well executed in person audition.

Re: LP 275M No Output
And no, I don't think you've got 25grand boat anchors... I don’t think so either. In 2018 they were $10k boat anchors. Today, probably $7k if they’re not humming. And these are per pair, so at most maybe $3.5k per anchor. A yacht needs two anchors for stability, and a long line to each. You do not h ...

Re: LP 275M No Output
The fuse RJ is pointing out is a KTK-2. It is discussed on p8 of the manual, which I assumed you had read from your post. FWIW, all will not necessarily “be well” if you replace the fuse. You may just blow it again, so have a handful of spares on hand. It blew for a reason and if that reason hasn’t b ...

Re: 2250 blowing rear fuses with Modulus pre
They did email me a quote of $728 to fix my issue. No explanation and no communication other than the email. No breakdown of what is wrong. I have left several messages asking for a call back to explain this cost after a complete rebuild only 2 years old. I do really like this amp but this ...

Posting once again. This is the definitive study.

FWIW, if records need “restoration” rather than just cleaning, the Kirmuss is great. I like mine. Michael Fremer says it works for him too.

Re: Martin Logan 11 a
I don’t know why people say they won’t play loud. This is just flat wrong. Unless you’ve got a 1000+ sq ft room and a lot of absorption, they’ll play loud enough to run you out of the room. The bigger issue is the squirrely load in the highest audible range. But there is very little (mostly zero) mus ...

Re: Martin Logan 11 a
I dunno … in the 1993 to 1995 period, when the Premier 11(*) amps were the latest and greatest, they were definitely gushworthy. Today, in my opinion, matching them with Martin Logan Masterpiece series speakers with onboard class D amps for the bass driver is a great choice. It is essentially bi-a ...

Here is a link to a similar thread from 2018.

Honestly, as often as people note transformer noise, the external stepup is probably going to cause the least aggravation… not that it won’t be aggravating.
