Good day, CJO brethren!
My apologies for being slow to update on my progress. It's been quite a journey, and I still don't think I'm done.
That's wild on the REF350s, RJ! Had to be quite the night club setting! I bet it did sound awesome. Entirely different experience driving pro speakers with a ...

Re: Premier 5s Inbound!
Good day CJO friends!
As always, thanks for your responses. All very helpful!
That's a great story about the Manley REF350s, RJ! Whatever happened to them after you got them working again?
So, after a ton of research, I've theoretically determined it's the ML Ascent speakers. While I've been ...

Greetings CJO Brethren!
Long time no talk. My apologies. I grew so frustrated with the Premier 5s that I boxed them back up and stuck them into storage hoping that perhaps in a year or so I would find the courage to try them again, perhaps with some other system changes. I'm slowly getting to the ...

Re: Surprised by Power
Just looked. At walmart it's $220 with free shipping. They also have a 30 day return policy so you can take it to any store and not have to pay for return shipping. If anybody has any kind of power issues (voltage, line noise), I would strongly recommend you give this unit a try. At such a low ...

Re: Premier 5s Inbound!
I’m assuming your speakers are the ascent - i, introduced in 2003.
According to the manual, there is a bass contour switch on the terminal block, labeled, so you could try that for free too.
And do take care to get the speaker wires phase coordinated so that one speaker’s low frequency output ...

Re: Premier 5s Inbound!
Hey Gents!
Thanks for all your great feedback! I agree, at the moment, I think it makes more sense to try some tweaks than it does to head straight to biamping, although biamping wouldn't be too difficult for me to set up and I do have a few good amp candidates for the job and a spare set of ...

Re: Premier 5s Inbound!
Greetings!
Last night my lovely lady and I spent several hours listening to the P5s with various jazz and some funk. After an hour or two, I just couldn't help but feel they were lacking in PRAT - Pace, Rhythm and Timing - with the bass sounding somewhat undefined and mushy and not having much ...

Re: Premier 5s Inbound!
Hola Boxcar,
It is very wise to change the tubes that are out of the possibility to the bias adjustment. They could go bad in any minute and might cause a damage to the amp. Red plate indicates a bad tube.
You have a nice system.
Happy listening!
Thanks Roberto!
I had a couple of tubes ...

Re: Premier 5s Inbound!
Hey Boxcar,
That's great to hear that Homes is sending across some tubes... certainly helps in finding the right set to work well.
Just thought I'd mention, regarding the Psvane stuff: I've tried many of their varients, had far too many disasters. They're mostly made in China and I'm not sure ...

Re: Premier 5s Inbound!
Good morning!
Last night was a bit shorter of a listening session but things are starting to sound a bit better (or perhaps my ears are adjusting). We didn't really do much detailed listening as we had some other things to attend to. The bias on the tubes seems to be holding for now. Homer told me ...

Boxcar:
I know Homer is honest and of good will.
But still … double check your plate fuses to make sure they’re of proper value. That will save you a lot of trouble down the road.
They’re probably correct … but confirm it for yourself. If they’re not, get the right ones. Don’t run it with ...

Re: Premier 5s Inbound!
Outstanding mate!
A true Classic, legendary amplifiers!
Yes definitely, I would get new tubes. Also be in touch with Homer K just to check if he may have any spares... A person with such a large collection of tube gear would usually have tubes in stock. So perhaps you could buy from him for ...

Re: Premier 5s Inbound!
Normally I would say buy new tubes. My hesitation is that prices are so ridiculous right now that it may be worthwhile holding off. Typically if the tubes are a little off on the bias it should not make a big difference in sound but it may decrease the lifespan of the tube. Now if you could hold ...

Re: Premier 5s Inbound!
Hey Gents,
I think the tubes that I couldn't get to bias just weren't able to be biased. I tried them in several different sockets and they behaved the same way in each one that I tried. Then I tried tubes from my stash in the sockets with the faulty tubes and they were able to be biased. I think ...

My wife lives in fear that she will have to sell my stuff. I console her by suggesting that she might be lucky and pass first. 😁
Ha! My GF would keep everything I have if I passed first.
She wouldn't let anyone touch it because it would be a way that she could still connect with me ...

First off, welcome Homer! You're knowledge of CJ gear is certainly a huge asset to this forum, and I hope that you become a regular contributor.
As far as the rest goes: I'm not interested in any further discussion. At this point, it's a waste of everyone's time.

Re: Premier 5s Inbound!
I paid $355 to have a pair of P5s shipped from North Carolina to Chicago. I’m not sure if they would charge extra to palletize them as I believe the seller palletized them.
There were options a bit cheaper at around $290, but it would have required me to drive an hour to pick them up.

Re: Surprised by Power
Looking at DVM specs this morning.
The best of the Harbor FreIght era meters looks like +/- (.8% +4) when measuring VAC.
I read this as
“If the meter reads 120, the actual VAC could be 115.04 to 124.96 VAC.”
Is there a different interpretation?
It suggests to me that for trouble shooting ...
