Re: I took the plunge and upgraded big time!
Sorry for the absence, but I’ve been auditioning speakers to complement the rest of my recent upgrades. I’ve been a Maggie user since 1986, but after listening to a number of speakers (Magnepan, Magico, B&W, Sonus Faber), I’ve decided to go in a different direction. I’ve decided to go with the ...

Re: I took the plunge and upgraded big time!
Here’s the info on the X upgrade from the Maggie website:
The MG_ X Upgrade Program
The general idea of the 'X' program is to take the existing design of a given speaker, and simply, almost one-for-one, replace all of the components leading up to the driver, with superior ones. This yields a ...

Re: I took the plunge and upgraded big time!
Has anyone had the opportunity to audition an “X” version of a Maggie speaker. I’m curious if the upcharge is worth it. I emailed the Maggie service department and they told me upgrading a 3.7 would run $4000 not including disassembly and reassembly nor shipping. $4k seems pretty steep of a cost for ...

Re: I took the plunge and upgraded big time!
I’m intrigued with the Diptyque design as it appears to up the engineering effort on the basic planar design. I’ve been a Maggie user since 1986 having owned the MGIIIA, MG3.5R, and currently the MG3.7 (not the i version). My view is that the Maggie design has been basically “stagnant” since the ...

Re: I took the plunge and upgraded big time!
I’m also intrigued by the Diptyque planar magnetic speakers from France. This design apparently uses neodymium magnets on both sides of the planar film. Initial reviews I have read are positive. Bass response is also reported to be superior to Maggie’s. I’m investigating getting an audition of these ...

Re: I took the plunge and upgraded big time!
Thanks Big Dog, excellent suggestion about amp stands. I’m doing some research on stands before I make a purchase decision. I’m also in the process of upgrading the signal cables to the Shunyata Research Alpha series cables. BTW, the Maggie’s are 3.7’s. The 20.7’s are in the upgrade plans in the ...

Re: I took the plunge and upgraded big time!
Ok, sorry for the delay in updating my new room status. See the attached photos, the room is 95% complete. I’m still waiting for a few items to arrive to complete the current setup. Speaker upgrade is in the near future along with room sound treatments. IMG_1723.jpeg https://www.conradjohnsonowners ...

Re: New version of RC-20 available
I wish CJ would update the design of this remote to incorporate rechargeable batteries and rechargeable via a USB C connector. My recently acquired MSB Technology Discrete DAC remote is designed this way and it’s very nice. No need to worry about replacing batteries or risk batteries leaking if one ...

Re: Is CJ still in business?
AJ, thanks for pointing out the lack of protection using the Cardas power strip, that thought escaped my aging brain cells!
As I said initially I’m currently using the P12 with absolutely no hum or other issues. I need more outlets so the P15 is an option and the good thing is PS Audio will take the ...

Re: Is CJ still in business?
I’m currently using a PS Audio P12 power regenerator with no problems (no hum issues at all). I’m in the upgrade mode so I thought I’d ask Jeff for his current thoughts on this topic. He recommended using the Cardas Nautilus AC power strip (20A version) plugged into my current dedicated 20A line. As ...

Re: Is CJ still in business?
Yesterday (5/9/23) I sent an inquiry to CJ through the website regarding power conditioning (I’m in the process of upgrading my AC capability for my system). I got a call from Jeff around 4:00pm the same day (he left a message on my cellphone). Today (5/10/23) Jeff called me back and we discussed my ...

Re: I took the plunge and upgraded big time!
Latest update, I’ve signed a contract to build a 16’x25’ room on the back of my house to house the stereo system. Things are just too crowded in my current room with the new hardware. Once the room is completed, I’ve pretty much narrowed it down to upgrading my current Maggie 3.7’s to 20.7’s ...

Re: I took the plunge and upgraded big time!
Thanks for the thoughts RJ!
I've been a Maggie user since 1986 so I've kind of have a soft spot for the brand. On the other hand, the lack of deep and powerful bass has always been a deficiency with the Maggies. I've not had the opportunity to try and pair a subwoofer with the panels because of my ...

Re: I took the plunge and upgraded big time!
Thanks for the insights, RJ. I’m just bouncing around ideas at this point. My local dealer carries both Magnepan and Focal so I’m going to audition both the 20.7’s and the Sopra No.3 and take it from there.

I’m going to take a look at the new PSAudio FR30/FR20 loudspeaker designs as the FR30 just got a fantastic review in the latest edition of The Absolute Sound.

Re: I took the plunge and upgraded big time!
RJ, thanks for the informative post, I’ll definitely give your suggestions a try before making any purchasing decisions.
As far as my 3.7’s, I’m got them attached to Mye stands with ISO-acoustic feet and upgraded fuses (the stock feet and fuses are a joke at this price point). Just these two ...
