PV6 balance potentiometer ; looking for
PV6 balance potentiometer ; looking for
Hello, I'm trying for a second time, my first topic was never published and I don't understand why.
Here is; I have a PV6 preamp whose balance potentiometer is defective.
I'm looking for a supplier of this part; a double potentiometer (2 gang) of 250K B (linear) with legs for printed circuit.
All my suppliers do not have this part.
For the moment I have installed fixed resistors of 120K and it allows me to use my system.
Do you have a reference for this part?
Thanks

I don't have a parts number but we do have the PV6 in our schematics database so you may want to look at that here: https://www.conradjohnsonowners.com/vie ... 35ac432367
You may be able to find a a replacement by measuring resistance levels of the stock part and getting something similar.

Re: PV6 balance potentiometer ; looking for
Although I recognize this comment as “not helpful,” it is worth noting that this is the kind of stuff that makes these 30+ year old units a risk. OEM Relays and pots are just not available. You might try cleaning with DeOxit. But it’s a stop gap measure that does nothing for wear.
Since balance is rarely changed, bypassing the balance control is another option. It sounds like that’s what you’ve tried.

It’s just stuff. I like mine. I hope you like yours. I probably like yours too.

If balance is not being utilized, I would probably just bypass it as AJ suggested. It's a simple solution. I can't remember the last time I ever changed the balance setting from 1:1 on a piece of stereo equipment.

Re: PV6 balance potentiometer ; looking for
Yep, agree with that as well.
If balance control is not too critical, just by-pass it. Then again, if the purpose of balance is to check if both channels are operating fine when connecting back gear, after perhaps a clean up or something, that can be ascertained by ear.
Although the balance control does help in this regard.
Hopefully you'll find the solution and part that is required, for now just enjoy those fine tunes!
Best, RJ

Roberto to the Rescue!
Well, it’s not OEM, but it’s made in Japan rather than China.
And it’s not expensive. Can’t beat that .

I see this before ,it's audio ( linear) not B. It will not work.roberto wrote: ↑Tue Feb 08, 2022 12:26 pm Partsexpress.com. https://www.parts-express.com/ALPS-RK27 ... ft-023-202
I found some B that will work. They will need some work.

I do first with Deoxit ; Pot is not dirty, 250 K resistor is openAnotherJohnson wrote: ↑Tue Feb 08, 2022 9:47 am Although I recognize this comment as “not helpful,” it is worth noting that this is the kind of stuff that makes these 30+ year old units a risk. Re: PV6 balance potentiometer ; looking for
I do as I wrote with 2 X 120 K resistors for each side left and right / pots
PV6 work fine. now I wish to keep it original

Nice work mate.
Like they say, if there's a will then there's a way!
Obviously you were on a mission to get it back to spec, looks like your hard efforts were not in vain. Cheers to CJ vintage gear, hope you're enjoying those fine tunes!

Thank you,
I would like to eventually find a potentiometer closer to the original and remove my resistors. Maybe on European websites?
But for now, it works very well

Thank ; it is a Audio pot A, it do not work as I wrote before , Thursday. I need a B pot, log
Re: PV6 balance potentiometer ; looking for
2 different kind of pot
Audio pot or linear pot or A pot :
When balance knob is in the middle, 250 k pot resistor see, let say, 200k on one side and 50 k on the other side of the wiper.
You can' use it as a balance control, for volume it is ok
B pot or log or logarithmic;
In the middle for a 250 k , resistor will read 125K each side of the wiper.
For balance control that is what you need

Re: PV6 balance potentiometer ; looking for
Captain Obvious here …
The OEM part may be available from CJ, but I suppose that’s little consolation since they generally won’t sell parts, but instead are willing to fix at the factory. With 3 hour minimum bench time charge.
Well, the service revenue stream is important. It’s a small company.
This is actually a pretty complicated part search. Center tap. Wiper diverting by X dB + AND - . These are difficult to match … and then you have the issue of how it sounds. The balance is in the audio circuit. That’s why they use discrete steps now instead of a wiper.
Maybe you could talk CJ into selling you one, especially if you are outside the US. You might try working through your official importer.
