Andrew Bird doesn’t really fit into any particular genre. He plays the violin and guitar. He sings, but also whistles in some parts. He has a small band as accompaniment, including a strong bass component.

He is a favorite of one of my daughters in law and she has seen him perform live in small and medium sized venues on several occasions.

This album was released earlier this month, and a copy was included among my Father’s Day gifts today.

After dinner we played it. I’d never heard him before.

She had never seriously listened to anything on my system, so I put her in the sweet spot. She wanted to take the 2 1/2 year old home for his bath, so she planned to listen to the first cut. They have the CD of this new release that they’ve played at home.

She sat down, I cued it up…. And she sat mesmerized through the album. She was impressed with the live feel of the presentation. She said that if she were me, she’d never leave this room.

I was impressed with the performance and recording too. His self written compositions and arrangements came across to me as an eclectic mix influenced by Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Lyle Lovett, and others. But you have to hear between the lines to recognize this.

It is very well done on every level. I would recommend it.
It’s just stuff. I like mine. I hope you like yours. I probably like yours too.

Listening a second time, I’m hearing influences of Chris Isaak, Elvis Costello, and even Leonard Cohen.

Maybe it’s just me … but this is a very enjoyable album for an after dinner listening session.

There is no higher complement.

She may be our next audiophile. They're both focused on music, but if she gets focused on sound too, the corner will have been turned.
