GAT2 replacement tubes? Call CJ or what do you recommend?

Post by joeinid »

I’m thinking about new tubes for my GAT2. Any ideas?

The website does not specifically mention anything other than the usual 6922 for a GAT. I could swear from reviews and other forums that the GAT Series 2 needs 7DJ8 or equivalent. My original GAT was very hard on tubes.

I don’t even remember what’s in my GAT2, I’ll look this weekend.

Thank you.

RJ or Roberto probably know.

It looks like 6922s or ECC88s from what I’ve seen.

Since there are just two, might as well just get them from CJ directly. But once you’ve taken a look, another option would be Upscale Audio’s Platinum grade.

Since it is the flag ship preamp, I’d probably try CJ’s stock for the first round of replacement.
It’s just stuff. I like mine. I hope you like yours. I probably like yours too.

Yes, it's hard to keep track... Jeff sometimes recommends certain types of tubes for certain applications and particular models. I think for the GATS2 he recommends a slightly different version. As AJ stated, you could always just flick across an email or perhaps a quick call. Best advice from the man himself, can't go wrong with his advice. He would also probably want to know the rest of your gear and the type of sound you're after Joe, based on your input he'd then recommend the correct type for your GATS2.

Otherwise, it's going to be a bit of a trial and error situation if you plan on tube roiling... then again that may give you more choices and end up with the best sound you prefer. It's all a fabulous experience Joe, you'll have to check out what suits best according to your custom sound.

Cheers, all the best

Thank you so much. I started searching AFTER I posted above. I'll reread that thread. I did call to order a set from CJ. They will call back tomorrow to finalize the sale.

I thing they are selling Tungsram PCC88/7DJ8 tubes. I actually may have some in my stash. My OEM tubes have been great and are still working great.

I wanted to see if there's anything better - as in sweeter and smoother.

Thank you.

I just took a look at my stash to re-verify that Jeff sold me Philips PCC-88s for both my GAT2 and my ART150, but he rubber banded the two for the GAT2 together and marked them and told me not to mix them up with the three otherwise identical ones he banded together for the ART150. He tests every tube and assured me that there is a difference. I must say, too, how long the supplied tubes seem to be lasting. I play my system a lot, more than ever what with hiding from a Covid infested world, and the tubes are still quiet a year and more in service. I never got more than 6 months out of the tube in the ET5 and would have been replacing the tubes in the ARTsa by now too. My system gets played at least 3 hours a day, 7 days a week, and often double or more that amount of time.
