Post by joeinid »

Just curious if these will be the new standard tubes and a replacement for KT-120's.

Thanks!

I do not think they are compatible or can be used interchangeably. Hopefully more info about them will come out.

That's it! I know the shape of that tube, both from Buck Rogers in the 25 Century (Erin Gray :D ) and I swear in the old (original) Battlestar Galactica, (Lorne Greene) there was a robot boss of Boltar that had the same shape as that KT150. ....yea, I admit it, I watched both of those shows.

Is it sad I want to use these tubes just cause they look so darn cool??? I have always loved the 300B, but price and lack of wattage, have always kept me away. May have to look for a diy for those purdy looking things. I have a few old tube power trans and OT from past fleabay impulse buys....time to dig for some spec sheets...lol. Just what I need, ANOTHER project....

Here are some spec sheets on the KT120 and KT150. Heater current is marginally higher for the KT150 but I wont pretend that I understand much of what any differences mean in a practical sense. Although I'm sure some of you do, so here they are:

Oppo BDP-105D and PSA DS DAC

Polk T50
In-Akustik Exzellenz Cat 6, Kimber IC, Q-Audio SC, Blue Circle and Acrolink power cords; PSA Juice Bar and Duet PLC

TYVVM... Interesting to see them in a Cary amp. Have to admit that I dont really follow the high end tube amps(except for CJ of course). But again, I KNOW for many just the glow of tubes, the nostalgia factor....or just the fun of listening to your "system" late at night(WAF alllowing...lol)....and the only light is the tubes. I "learned" to evaluate with my eyes closed, turn head each and every way methodically to determine phase and soundstage, etc...... but you could always reorientate on the tubes. My first were a MC ma230 or pa230, which had a cage.....and I so ever ignorantly sold(found in a pawn shop working for....ugh...I dont want to remember). But sold that for a pair of Dynaco ST70s JUST SO I COULD USE my PV!(sorry for shouting, but it still gets me going). It was a very pretty setup, fairly sure I have posted a pic of it here now. FWIW....the guy/business that sold me the st-70s....put them back to stock for me...only later after working in the industry in the same area do I know that the mods he removed were worth more than what I paid for the 70's. Any way.....longwinded again....thanks for the specs, will have to look into the Cary design to see if it is stock or custom. I doubt I could afford working Cary gear, but who knows...maybe there is some gear in need of some solder love.....lol.

sure looks like no problem. if all 16 KT150 tubes were at the high end of the spec, it would mean 800MA additional heater current.
depending on individual tube variations, it wouldn't be impossible to install 16 KT-150s and use less heater current that a specific set of KT120s.

let the fun begin. Although I'd never of course take a chance. hopefully at some point CJ would give'em a whirl.

Thanks for posting the specification sheets!
