Act of Valor (2012) on Blu-ray

Overall not bad, actually better than I thought it would be. I especially liked the part where the soldiers fire on the truck with the boat mounted miniguns!

Just got finished watching Casablanca #73A (1942) [CC1287L]. Nice Criterion disk. Quality was actually better than expected. I had never seen this classic film and it was about time.

Love the Laserdiscs!

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island on Blu-ray. Pretty bad movie. Definitely a rental and not a buy. Some of it was ok but then there were some really crazy moments like the bee flying sequences which just kind of ruined the thing.

Just got done watching City Slickers (1991) [ID2713SU]. Good movie, and very decent soundtrack.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) on Blu-ray. It was actually a lot of fun and the sound and visual quality was top notch. Definitely recommend a viewing if you have not seen it yet.

Clash of the Titans (2010). Fun little mindless romp. I haven't seen the sequel yet, I hope it's better....

I watched City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold (1994) [71196] on laserdisc. Unfortunately, the disk seems bad as there started to be "wavy" lines in the screen and some small vertical jumping in the picture at the end of side 1 and side 2. The beginning of each side was ok. Also, there were some "popping" noises at the end of side 1 when the dialog was present. This may be a case of laser rot or just a bad disk. On visual examination there didn't appear to be any unusual marks on the disc.

Watched Necessary Roughness (1991) [LV32597-WS]. Was basically a less funny "Major League."

As for the problems with City Slickers 2, it seems to have been due to a slight warp in the disc.

John Carter. A bit underwhelming to say the least. Oh well. The special effects were pretty good at least.

21 Jump Street (2012) on blu-ray. "Ok" comedy. I think Jonah Hill is proportionately funny to his weight,... I was happy to hear recently that he has gained his weight back.

War Horse (2011). If you like horses buy it, otherwise it's a rental.

Just finished watching Spy Hard (1996) [8289 AS] with Leslie Nielsen. Unfortunately, the movie was no where in the league of the Naked Gun series or Airplane. I have to say that the picture quality and 5.1 AC3 soundtrack was very good (this was a surprise).

Just finished watching Darkman (1990) [42440]. One of Liam Nesson's early roles.

Watched Mission: Impossible (1996) [LV 31899-2WS] last night. This was actually a pretty entertaining 2 hours and probably the best of the series, IMHO. What was really impressive however was the excellent 5.1 AC3 soundtrack on this disk. A total surprise that blew me away. One of the most dynamic LD's available. Definitely one you want to turn up the volume!

I also saw "The Wrath of the Titans" on blu-ray the other day. I have to say that the story and acting is pretty weak, but good special effects and excellent sound. Good dynamics, clarity, and use of surround channels. One thing I have noticed since having a decent home theater room is I am actually enjoying "bad movies" with good sound. I guess that's a good thing....?

Just got finished watching Death Becomes Her (1992) [41424]. This was brand new and sealed in shirnk wrap. I have to admit that it pains me to open up sealed disks but my first love is "watching" laserdiscs, not just collecting them on a shelf.

Going through an older comedy phase lately. Watched the original Naked Gun and then Raising Arizona. Two classics.

Recent movies have included:

The Dictator- ok but Borat was much better.
Wraith of the Titans- Good demo disk, story was non-existent. Nonetheless, a fun ride viewed on a 150" screen with surround sound and the volume cranked up!
Get the Gringo- I guess this was supposed to be Mel Gibson's comeback picture. I didn't think it was very good.
Safe House- "Ok" suspense/action film.
In Time- Lots of pretty young people, not much story...

All of these were blu-ray.

So it looks like the mail man lost my blu-ray movie that I sent back on Monday so this week it was all Laserdisc watching...

Contact: Special Edition (1997) [15041]=Very nice disc with a great 5.1 AC3 soundtrack.
Back to the Future Part II (1989) [40965]=Very good film, not as good as the first part, but nonetheless a good story. And of course who can forget the alley seen with all the Laserdiscs in the background.
Get Shorty (1995) [ML105493]=Ok film, some big names.
Last Starfighter, The (1984) [40078]=Classic 80's scifi with some "state of the art" CGI (for the 80's that is). Wonderful soundtrack by Craig Safan.

I reported the Netflix blu-ray missing so they should be sending a new disk out, but it was a nice Laserdisc only run instead of the usual alternating.

Some movies recently shown in the home theater:

Conan the Barbarian (1981) [41018]=classic 80's movie that made Arnold the superstar. Good story, plenty of gratuitous violence. Definitely one to watch if you've never seen it. Plus, as a bonus you get to learn "what is best in life!"

The Hunger Games (Blu-ray)=Didn't like this at all. I couldn't tell if this was for kids or adults. I haven't seen the twilight movies (and don't plan to), but I presuming this is similar. Terrible acting, story was a mess. I can't believe this movie had an 80 million dollar budget, the sets looked cheap, almost like a "made for TV" movie. Stay away.

Immortals (Blu-ray)=This one I really liked. Once again, lot's of violence. If you like slow motion ass kicking, this is for you. A lot like 300. It's a dark movie so you need to watch it at night or in a home theater room as you will miss all the detail in the picture if you don't view it under the correct lighting environment.

Her Alibi (1989) [11835]=classic 80's movie with Tom Selleck. Your either going to love or hate the cheesiness of this movie. Thumbs up from me. :)

Avengers (Blu-ray)=Great movie. They did a great job of getting a bunch of action stars together and everybody get's to play a good part. There is a good reason this movie has made over 1.5 billion dollars already. Definitely pick this up, crank up the volume!

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Blu-ray)=This movie had some real acting talent. It unfortunately went kind of slow.

Thor (Blu-ray)=This is one of our favorites recently so we did another watching after seeing the Avengers. I really liked this including the music in the soundtrack. Highly recommended.

My Cousin Vinny (1992) [1876-80]=classic movie. Joe Pesci is really funny in this one.

Battleship (Blu-ray)=ah terrible. Transformers without the transformers. Terrible acting, story is dumb. Special effects are pretty good. The only part of the movie I enjoyed is when they played AC/DC really loud during the ship attack scene. Stay away.

The Tall Man (Blu-ray)="ok movie." The end is a plot twister. Rental, but not a buy.
