Finished!

...as in the staining oil has been applied to the pad. If I may say so myself, I'm thrilled with how it looks. http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k220/jeffreybehr/Equipment%20rack/Amp%20platforms/Amppad%20for%20ET250S/Finishing%20it/2015Nov07_8-1st%20coats%20cmplete%20an%20hour%20later_1800w_zps9qxt...

It's about 98% finished

I applied the layers of SoundCoat to the two surfaces. Re: Amppad for ET250S

Coming along great. What kind of finish are you planning to use? I just refinished some furniture in my home and used some Howard brand finish http://www.howardproducts.com/prod-restor-a-finish.php , in mahogany. I also put on a coat of "Feed-N-Wax" from them http://www.howardproducts.com...

More progress

The faces are attached to the top doublelayer, and the bottom doublelayer is cut to the correct size. (The faces do not touch the bottom doublelayer.) The top half of the top doublelayer is goncalo alves; the faces are ipe. http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k220/jeffreybehr/Equipment%20rack/Amp%20p...

Re: Re-tubing my PV-8

Vs 1 and 2 are 12AX7s, Vs 3 and 5 are 5751s, and Vs 4 and 6 (the cathode followers) are 5965s. See http://www.conradjohnson.com/It_just_sounds_right/a-PV8.html If I were buying a complete set of new tubes for an '8 AND I used the fonostage, for a fine-sounding low-priced, New-Production 12AX7 I'd b...

Tonite it's got c. 330 hours on it.

It's running 24/7 driving broadband pinknoise into the speakers. It continues to sound smoother--less harsh--in the upper frequencies. Also have been braking-in a pair of new JJ E88CC input tubes. Have received the input pot, a TDK 2500-series stereo unit. Its 208K resistance in parallel with the a...

Re: Amppad for ET250S

While waiting for the glued facings to dry hard, my friend planed the top of the bottom slab so that the top and bottom wouldn't wobble when stacked. This surface will be sanded before the SoundCoat goes on it. http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k220/jeffreybehr/Equipment%20rack/Amp%20platforms/Ampp...

Re: Amppad for ET250S

OK, Mr. Admin, I did as you requested and chose a side of the goncalo alves as the top. http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k220/jeffreybehr/Equipment%20rack/Amp%20platforms/Amppad%20for%20ET250S/2015Nov04_10204972_slabs_1800w_zps7wyr5jhu.jpg Should have the 2 double-thick layers glued together with ...

Here's my old CC-speaker stand

Speaker is a Vandersteen VCC-1, much improved with better parts in the x-over. I removed and drilled the bottom plate to attach the stand. http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k220/jeffreybehr/0%20Vandersteen%20other/24July2011_front_1280w.jpg Can't remember which wood this is, I know it's light. Re: Retrieved the sanded slabs and bought another stick...

...for facing. The sanded slabs look rather dull, Gonna disagree with you. The wood looks amazing just unfinished like that. Can't wait to see the final outcome. How hard is the wood, just be careful if it's soft as you don't want equipment to leave a mark on the surface? Putting a 100 lb amp on so...

...for facing. The sanded slabs look rather dull, and they are now, and these pics are more colorful than the wood is. http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k220/jeffreybehr/Equipment%20rack/Amp%20platforms/Amppad%20for%20ET250S/2015Oct31_stick%20amp%204%20slabs3_1800w_zpstkqncf5s.jpg http://i89.photobu...

Re: ET250S hybrid poweramp

you should have bought the MF-2550 - it's a CJ reworked McCormack DNA 250, with the same distributed architecture, but much better components, and reworked circuit topology. Really? How is it that you KNOW that, that you state it as if it's FACT? I was sort of kidding about you should have bought i...

200-hour report

Without changing any hardware in the last several days, the sounds seems to have tamed a bit more in the upper frequencies, as in I don't grimace mildly at higher-level chunks of massed violins. My favorite 'test music', Elgar's Serenade for Strings on a TELARC SACD, sounds almost 100% tonite. And ...

Amppad for ET250S

My woodworker-friend got all those sticks cut and glued and I took the 4 resulting slabs to Woodworkers Source to be surface sanded. One has a bit of 'potato-chip' dish and it'll be only about 1/2" (12 - 13mm) thick when finished. All these now are 13/16" (21mm) thick and after sanding fl...

Decided today that the amppad using 3 layers...

...totaling 2-1/4 inches just wasn't thick enough, so I just returned from buying another stick of goncalo alves for a 4th layer. The pad's weight will be, I estimate, c. 40 pounds. No wonder my wife has called me Mr. Excess. ;) :? FWIW, I've also decided to try to 'improve' this amp just a little,...

...much better than I thought it would at this point, and it'll only get better sounding! :D 'Getting better sounding' will be assisted by better speaker cable to both channels--now I'm using about seven feet of old 20g. zipcord wound around the spades to extend the left-channel cable to the amp on...

Re: ET250S hybrid poweramp

Day 3 and it still runs! Found a slightly larger pad and am now footing it with 4 Herbies Tall Tenderfeet at the edges because there's no bottom on the amp. http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k220/jeffreybehr/C-j%20equipment/conrad-johnson%20ET250S%20poweramp/2015Oct24_on%20new%20pad_2000w_zpsowwaec...
