Re: McC DNA-HT5 poweramp
Wow, awesome equipment. I like the inside of the HT5, it is crowded, but still well organized. Let us know how the bassbox project is going. Looks like you have a very nice and sturdy box, I'm sure that will give you a very detailed low end. TY, and yes, it is. The bassbox is going slowly; my frien...

Re: Do you listen to music in the dark?
You're certainly not alone; some of my friends close their eyes when listening critically. If a piece of music is especially emotionally involving, I might turn out my reading light(s) and listen in the resulting gloom, but it's still not dark in my musicroom.

Re: My multichannel c-j/McCormack/Vandersteen system
Wow, once again, truly amazing. I think having a non-symmetric room is a real advantage. My room also has sloping ceilings and the back of the room is different than the front. This really helps break up the sound and I get essentially no echoing what so ever. I also have about 150 acoustic panels ...

Re: My multichannel c-j/McCormack/Vandersteen system
The room was great as rebuilt as a musicroom in the spring of 1982. It's 21' wide, 19' deep; the ceiling starts at 6-1/2' at the front wall, rises to 12' over the listener's head, and then slopes back and down to the 8'-tall rear wall. By design, there are relatively few parallel surfaces among the...

Re: My multichannel c-j/McCormack/Vandersteen system
Here's a current view of the front floor, cable, etc. All cables for the 3 front channels are lifted off the floor; speaker cable for surround systems and powercords for 3 bass amps are not lifted (but for immediately behind the 'HT5 poweramp) and are on the floor. http://i89.photobucket.com/albums...

Power conditioners and cable
Didn't have room for power conditioners and cable in the main message. First, all power to the musicroom's A-V equipment arrives via three 20-amp dedicated lines. Those 11g. conductors are unbroken from the circuitbreakers to the three junction boxes across the front of the house. Thru-wall stubs a...

Re: My multichannel c-j/McCormack/Vandersteen system
So, I have to ask. Do you think you're all done with the setup or is there still something that you plan to change? It seems like you have spent a considerable amount of time fine tuning the equipment list. I'm still working on the centerchannel system. The new bassbox is designed to add some bass ...

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k220/jeffreybehr/Room/2012Sep18_tripoded_1200w_zps82dd0efb.jpg This has been evolving for decades. I've NEVER had a better-sounding system or, indeed, even heard an overall-better-sounding system. Source is an Oppo '95, with 1/8" SoundCoat added to the cover a...

KT-88s are just fine; it's the KT-120s you should be careful of.Redrocket019 wrote:Thanks antaresbluespirit, I guess I'll be sticking to the 6550's then.

Re: The six-channel MET1
AS an aside I did a head t head comparison with the MET-1 against a Meitner. The CJ simply clobbered the Meitner in my listening: better detail, superior response, far greater dimensionality. Stu Interesting. Years ago the Arizona Audio Video Club did a preamp comparo that included my then-stock-an...

McC DNA-HT5 poweramp
I bought this amp after comparing the sound of my upgraded Marantz MA500 (in the center, here)... http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k220/jeffreybehr/MA500/Ampfrontwithblacktoes_1280w.jpg ...to a known-great-sounding amp, a Monarchy SE-160 in which I had improved some parts but sold to a friend. The...

Re: McCormack MAP1
I just received schematics for the MAP1 from c-j. The active circuitry is direct-coupled, so there are no '$100 capacitors' to buy... ;) ...but it's got LOTS of powersupply-bypass caps, and the sound quality would benefit from replacing some of those magnetic-lead orangedrops with at least SoniCap ...

Re: Conrad Johnson PV-5 Preamp
Animal, first pls read my signature--I'm NOT a golden-eared audiofile capable of hearing all sorts of subtle differences between 2 pieces. I can distinguish some differences over days or weeks, and I have managed to put together a fabulous-sounding system. As I wrote, I got rid of the rebuilt PV5 q...
DNA-750s
I bought this pair, refurb'd, directly from c-j after Lew Johnson told me they were the best-sounding amps ever to wear the McC name. They drive VERY well my much-loved Vandersteen 5As and rather brought the latter and my music system 'to life' after I had been using various lower-power multiple am...

Re: Conrad Johnson PV-5 Preamp
I've had at least 2; this was a new product in the early '80s when I was a c-j dealer. Its 70dB of total gain is split 40 in the fono section and 30 in the line section. The latter certainly is high compared with contemporary linestages, but it still works well. I rebuilt one for a friend, with Mul...

Re: What do you play to demo your system?
I've long used a TELARC multichannel SACD to determine just how transparent my system and ears are at the moment. It's a collection of string suites (Grieg, Dvorak, and Elgar, the latter my fave) played by the Rotterdam Chamber O and recorded for TELARC by the experts at Polyhymnia; number is SACD-...

Re: The six-channel MET1
jeffreybehr, I have heard about the "Ambient recovery mode" from other users, what's your opinion on this? How do you think it compares to other DSP's that convert stereo to multi-channel? I actually have never heard it and I am very interested as I often watch Laserdiscs that have 2 chan...

The six-channel MET1
I bought one of these directly from c-j (1) years ago. I had started my home-theater system with a Marantz 9000-something pre/pro. After that, I decided that the DACs living in discplayers were just fine and bought an Audio Refinements all-analog 6-channel preamp, the Pre-5 (2). I improved the coup...

Re: From the Arizona desert
Hi admin; do you have a name? I mean multichannel (not 'multi-channel') sound for audio listening via SACDs and DVD-As and to a lesser extent using c-j's Ambient Recovery Mode* to recreate some ambience from 2-channel sources. I also watch a lot of movies (mostly on Blu, some on HD DVD) in MC. I al...
