Re: Premier 16 II vs. ET 5

I have an ET5. I also have a Prem 16LS2 ... ET5 definitely less romantic and better bass. Prem 16 more 'golden' and rolled off in treble. Which is better is a matter of taste and associated equipment. I do have a question for those here... The ET3 SE is well known to be very high gain and very hard...

Re: Tune up procedure

I am not a tech so excuse me if I get this wrong. My understanding is that if a device has not been used for a long time, it can be good to power it up on a variac ( variable power supply ) at a lower voltage than your standard mains voltage, and you slowly bring it up to standard voltage. I think t...

Re: KNOB Volume for PV12

Sorry - I don't know. I would guess it is 50 kilo-Ohms (50kΩ, or 50,000 Ohms) based on the name. Also would need to be dual channel. You could try asking Alps what the current equivalent is for a ALPS 616N 50KDX2, or try asking Conrad Johnson what the specifications are for the volume control. I jus...

Re: ET3 se sounds distorted

It would be interesting to hear if Anthony resolved his issue and what the solution was. Strange that no-one responded to him back then. I think it is unlikely that the phono stage is out of phase - in terms of left channel being the opposite phase of the right channel. I think the phono stage is ph...

Re: PV-1 to PV-2AR conversion

Hi Steve, Can you tell us about the rest of your system? It could be that you have very efficient speakers and/or an amplifier with high gain. If this is the case, then any hiss or hum will be exaggerated and will be audible in your system. The gain in conrad johnson preamps is very high by the way....

Re: New to me PV2A

Is there something else to look at, that might be the issue? first off - don't get electrocuted - be careful due to high voltages. Some general simple checks I would do to try and narrow down where the issue is: - check that it is actually powering up. Is the light turning on near the power switch ...

... Sounds fantastic for sure...or did. It was heaven for about 90 min until..boom..all sound ceased immediately. It now just plays about the same volume as a turntable cartridge level--no matter what the volume there is little to no amplification. ... Just from rereading your old post, are we sure...

... US fuse F1 should be 1/2amp...and is is 1/4. UK spec as I suspected US fuse F2 should be 1/4 amp...and is is....very interestingly T500 so 500ma which is 1/2 amp. Uk spec is 1/8 amp. This could be an issue. I would think the fuses for F1 and F2 were placed in the wrong order. If they were swapp...

Re: The six-channel MET1

From the schematic it looks like V5 6C4 is centre (CTR on the schematic). V1 LF left Front V2 RF V3 LF left rear V4 RR V5 CTR http://www.conradjohnsonowners.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=128 In "Part 1" Schematics file Anthony edit: not sure if that helps. I don't have a MET1 so I don't kno...

Congratulations RJ. I've enjoyed reading about the virtues of your Quads. It is a shame they have not been reliable. I am glad you found a suitable replacement.

Cheers,
Anthony

Re: The six-channel MET1

... Notice in the attached pic how dark that cavity is...i do believe they are supposed to noticeably glow? It can't be the power fuse (turns on normally), it can't be the control fuse (switches inputs, etc), so there's only one left. I would think it would give some kind of warning if the fuse cir...

Re: CJ PV10 AL

Hi all! After comprehensive online research I bought a CJ PV10 AL on ebay. If I connect it to my power amp through TAPE OUT it works fine (bypasses volume control), but if I connect it through MAIN OUT only right channel works and there is some static noise occasionaly, but left channel does not wo...

Re: CJ Premier 17LS Hum Noise

Hi Raja, I am glad that solved the noise problem. I would think that the 17LS would already use high quality tube sockets since it is a premier model. Are you sure the existing ones are not gold plated? Regarding the remote, I don't know where you could get a replacement PCB other than maybe a distr...

Re: CJ Premier 17LS Hum Noise

Hi I have two pairs E88CC tubes instead of 6922, can I try on my CJ premier 17Ls? Thanks Raja As I understand it E88CC is an improved version of ECC88. 6922 is an improved version of 6DJ8. Perhaps that means E88CC = 6922? There is certainly no harm in trying E88CC in your CJ premier 17LS. It is ele...

Re: CJ Premier 17LS Hum Noise

Well done fixing the hum problem. I am impressed that you were able to narrow it down to the relay so quickly. I would have suspected some other cause such as tubes or ground loops. Not sure I would have the knowledge to suspect the output relay. When the relay was removed, were you able to test the...

Re: How To Identify A Classic Preamp VS A Classic SE? Trying To Make Sure I Wasn't Scammed

Regarding the tubes used, I don't think there are many choices for this model. As far as I am aware the tubes have not been manufactured for years (maybe decades) so the ones CJ supply are very likely NOS (new old stock). So I would think it is quite possible that CJ supplies tubes that may not be a...

Joe - Classic is different to the Classic 2 - though your points are still valid for either model. site showing pictures of classic: http://www.homecinema-fr.com/forum/achat-preampli-haute-fidelite/preampli-conrad-johnson-classic-t29927083.html Note that there are a number of orange capacitors next ...
