Re: CJ PV10 AL

The PV10 shares the power supply for both channels so that rules out a power supply problem. If you swapped tubes and that did not help it can be one of two things. One of the resistors in the right channel or the muting relay that failed and does not unmute the right channel. A technician should be...

Re: Telefunken VS Mullard 12AX7 Tubes

As Secretariat mentioned this is not doable. The 6GK5 is actually not a bad tube and can be had for relatively low prices. Get some GE's, Mullards and Hitachi tubes for cheep on the net. I bought a stash of 6GK5 that will last me a lifetime for my Premier 14 and Premier 15, both sound wonderful.

Re: Classic 2SE tube upgrade

NOS tubes are a hit and miss affair. You can get really good ones but in most cases I was disappointed and its not worth the cost for me. There are good current production tubes you can use. I have found the EH 6922 to be a very decent tube. If you want to upgrade you can try the Gold Lion 6922 whic...

Tubes generally require 10-40 hours of break in to sound their best. Glad all turned out well.
Enjoy.

Re: Premier 11A mods

To be honest, I have never seen a non "A" version. If asked I would have thought the "A" version was the only one out there. Maybe it's worth a call to CJ tech support.

Re: What brought you to own Conrad Johnson gear ? ...

I owned the CA200 for awhile and its the best solid state amplifier I have ever heard. To some extent I even preferred it to the Premier 350. If I ever need to scale down this would be my amp.

Re: Premier 11A mods

Your 11A may be 20+ years old. It could indeed be the caps. The Premier 11A does not have electrolytic caps in it apart from the heater power supply. The polypropylene and polystyrene caps last forever with no degradation. I would check the heater electrolytic cap which will probably need replaceme...

Re: What brought you to own Conrad Johnson gear ? ...

My first CJ piece was the PV10. At the time I was using an Adcom pre/power combo. My friend who was a CJ dealer suggested I try the PV10 (their least expensive preamp at the time). As soon as I got it I was blown away by how much better everything sounded. That was almost 30 years ago. When I grew u...

Re: PV5 - Parts Connexion upgrade

Hi Elan, In general CJ capacitors are better than most you will find. If the capacitor is labeled CJ I would not change it. The big blue caps don't look like originals to me. I have never seen them in any CJ equipment. I would start with upgrading all resistors in the signal path to Vishay Z201, exp...

Re: Try to choose between either ET3 or ET3se

Big Dog is spot on. The ET3 and Classic 2 essentially use the same circuit design. The ET3 adds remote functionality.

Re: CT6 Teflon upgrade, anyone done/heard it?

One other idea is to upgrade to the ACT2. The ACT2 is a far better preamp with Teflon caps. For the price of your CT6 plus cap upgrade you can probably get an ACT2 which would be a much better choice IMO.

Re: Premier 16 II vs. ET 5

The modern CJ preamps ET3, ET5 run the filament voltage a but high which can be a but hard on some of the current production 6922 tubes. You can use the 7DJ8/PCC88 tube which is a 7 volt version of the 6DJ8/6922 tube and it will work perfectly for years. This is what I used in the ET3SE when I had i...

Re: Premier 10/14 vs ET-3

I own the PR14, ET3SE and ACT2. In stock form I do not think the PR14 betters the ET3. However, if you upgrade a few resistors and upgrade to Teflon caps it is far superior to the ET3SE and really approaches the ACT2 in its level of performance. After upgrading my PR14 I sold the ET3SE and never loo...

I suspect you will need a higher power amp for the Quads. I used Martin Logan with Premier 12 monoblocks and LP125m monoblocks and they drove the MLs beautifully.

Another option would be a high output MC cartridge like the Sumiko Blackbird. A great performing cartridge but at the higher price point.

Re: New Member Introduction

The onboard phono stages in the PV10 and PV12 are designed for MM cartridges and will not have enough gain for a 0.7mv cartridge. It can work but you will have a high noise floor while working at the top end of the volume control. Not recommended. As for the power amps, the MV50 is an entry level am...
