Re: ART 150/300 Anniversary Amplifiers

It is interesting to see C-J use the new KT-150 tubes. I only saw a couple of amps at AXPONA use these, but there were many using the KT-120. I would trust C-J to get this "right" and voice the new tubes to sound like their other amplifiers. A 300 watt monoblock. Hmmm...what I could do wit...

Re: Premier 11 / KT120 tubes

Some locals and I were just talking about this at AXPONA--a metal punch that would accurately cut out the opening for an IEC connector. On the Premier 11, there is enough room for one, but not much room to work with on either side since it is so close to the edge of the rear panel. I also wonder if ...

Re: Premier 11 / KT120 tubes

Additional question--has anyone ever adapted a C-J power amp with an IEC power cable input? The cable on this amp has a spot with electrical tape on it to cover some damaged insulation (not to bare wire though), so a future project might be to replace the cable, or adapt it for IEC so I could plug i...

Premier 11 / KT120 tubes

I landed a Premier 11 today (not the 11A), at quite a good price. I gave it a good cleaning, touched up a few small nicks in the black paint, and polished the gold top and front panels. It's looking pretty much like new! The tubes are of unknown age and origin--three of the four 6550s are missing th...

Re: CJ premier 11A tubes

Do the 12AX7 have too much gain to use in the 11A? Only because I can find a lot more replacement options for those, vs. the 5751.

Re: Where did you hear about Conrad Johnson Owners.com?

Since the poll is closed...I believe I found it via a Google search, looking for information on a specific preamp model (back when I was considering different C-J preamps). I have no issues mentioning this forum elsewhere. I run a few myself, and certainly appreciate any mention anyone can give foru...

Re: Premier 11A mods

I wonder if there is a schematic out there of the Premier 11 as opposed to the 11A, as that would make it possible to find out exactly what is different about the biasing circuitry. I have a line on an 11 that is very nicely priced, but in a way I don't want anything that might be compromised. Havin...

Re: Metalwork for C-J power amplifiers

I wonder if anyone makes reproduction metalwork for components. I could see it being a handy service, as I am sure there are others out there who might want to freshen up a used component. CNC machining could cut a nearly exact replica of the original, and after that it would only be a matter of las...

Re: What brought you to own Conrad Johnson gear ? ...

When I was ready to upgrade an audio friend steered me to a Cambridge system. It sounded so sterile to my ears.........reminded me of Yamaha.....some like it but not me. I can relate to that. I briefly had a Rotel amp in my system and thought it was the most lifeless and clinical thing I've ever he...

To follow up, I asked C-J directly about metal parts for the Premier 12 and Premier 11. They have neither.

Re: Premier 11A mods

The "A" version was very short lived, less than a year: "Introduced in February, 1993 | Eleven-A in January, 1994 | Eleven XS in June, 1995" "The Eleven-A added a noise filter on the bias indicator circuit, first employed in the Premier Twelve. The Eleven-XS is an Eleven-A w...

Re: Premier 11A mods

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but since it is somewhat related... I've actually seen a Premier 11 locally for sale. Tempting, provided it has the cage. But I wonder if there really is any noticeable sonic difference between the two. I seem to recall that the "A" modification involved so...

Re: Metalwork for C-J power amplifiers

RJ, that is good to hear. When I asked regarding my PV-14L, they did not have any faceplates. But, I can ask about the others I have come across. When my PV-14L was shipped, the remote had shifted to a corner of the amp and pushed on one of the buttons sideways, dislodging it somewhat. Not a big dea...

Metalwork for C-J power amplifiers

Just out of curiosity, does Conrad-Johnson stock any of the metalwork for their older amplifiers? I believe ARC does, but I fear that based on what I have read elsewhere, C-J does not. I am thinking of items like faceplates and tube cages. I have seen a few amps over the years, but have resisted the...

Re: Premier 11A mods

@AudioDon You might consider the tubes. For the output tubes, presumably a KT-120 will work, if perhaps a little under-utilized in the amp. The driver tubes may make a bigger difference in sound. One of the good tube dealers like Upscale Audio could probably help you in your quest, if you let them k...

Re: The Martin Logan Ethos- one superb value in electrostats

Hey, Big Dog! I'm glad to hear you like your Ethos. I have been a fan of planar speakers ever since hearing the CLS-II way back in the summer of 1987. At $2,350 US, I thought they were a bit pricey and out of reach. Had I only known! I currently own a pair of the Sequel II that I bought very inexpen...

Re: Anyone running CJ pre with non-CJ SS amp?

Currently reviewing the GAT 2 with my reference Pass Xs 300 mono blocks and the combination is fantastic. It's just like when I started my CJ journey about 35 years ago with a PV-1 and the Threshold 400A power amp. Interesting... Good to see you here, Jeff! Your write-up of the Nak PA-7 was one of ...

Re: Anyone running CJ pre with non-CJ SS amp?

I agree--the MF-2300a is probably the better match. I always feel the "family" approach to preamp/power amp is the best. But I go between wanting that or maybe a more powerful tube amp like the Premier 140 (yet I could do without the heat, in this part of the house). It's C-Js fault they m...

Re: What brought you to own Conrad Johnson gear ? ...

How did I get here? I was looking to get into a tubed preamp, something from one of the better-established high-end companies. (No, I didn't want a rebuilt Dynaco PAS or anything of that nature...they can be nice but that was not my goal.) I was looking at Audio Research (can I say that here? :D ) b...

Re: Where do you buy your tubes? From Conrad Johnson or ....

I recently bought a NOS matched pair of Mullard M8080/CV4058 tubes from a UK seller on eBay. I purchased a matched pair in March from the same seller, and one of the pair went bad (it started making a rustling noise). Long story short, with my more recent order, they shipped another pair to take car...
