Re: Hello from New Jersey
Welcome, M, and hello again Joe. I think both of you have this signal-polarity question effectively wrong. Yes, the fono* stage does not invert signal polarity (because it has an even number of gain stages), but that's only from fono-in to RECORD-out. From fono-in to main-out AND from any of the li...

tvr and fellow inmate, glad to see you made it; welcome. My current c-j pieces are my much-loved MET1 6-channel preamp and a McCormack DNA-HT5 poweramp that drives center and surround speakers. I hope to replace the 'HT5 with a c-j MET150 by the end of the year. http://www.conradjohnson.com/It_just...

I've loved the sounds of SET poweramps ever since I bought a pair of Antique Sound Lab Explorer 805 50-Watt SET monoamps after reading Art Dudley's review of them in 'Stereophile'. He too owned Quad 989 e-stats and found the 805s' power level adequate. http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k220/jeffrey...

Re: Biggest disappointment in equipment sound quality?
Many years ago I bought a subwoofer from DAC, and was appalled by the sound quality and the build quality. DAC was revealed for what it is, a catalog that sells overpriced junk to yuppies with overblown advertising. The woofer did not even have a curvalinear cone, being a straight sided paper cone ...

GRAVITY. It looks as good at home as it did thrice in theaters last year. This is a technological and artistic high point for Cuaron and crew.

Re: PV11 cap replacement, original or upgrade?
A few more thoughts on the PV11. 1. I see that c-j did not use a line-stage input-coupling cap, as they did in the PV5. That will improve overall transparency a tad compared with having a coupling cap in that position. 2. This preamp uses cathode followers in both sections to reduce output impedanc...

If ever I were in the market for a stereo hi-power amp, I believe I'd buy the ET250s... http://www.conradjohnson.com/It_just_sounds_right/a_et250_met150.html http://www.spearitsound.com/product.cgi?group=735&product=743 ...but that's probably because I LOVE the sounds of vacuumtubes. As it is, ...

Re: PV11 cap replacement, original or upgrade?
foot, my PV11 schematic indicates that a 0.15/200 is the bypass cap on the larger 2/250 output-coupling cap. Most probably, the 2/250 is a 'propylene and the .15 is a 'styrene. (The earlier intersection coupler in the phono stage is another 0.15, but that one is rated at 400VDC.) Keeping things on ...

Re: Hello from the icebox, I mean central Iowa, USA
Welcome, macab. I've had a couple PV-5s and even was a part-time c-j dealer when it was new in the '80s. With 70dB total gain, it's split 42 in the fono section and 28 in the line. The latter gain is rather hgh compared with modern line stages, so probably you'll be running the level control in its...

Re: Schematic
...I recently purchased a conrad johnson PV11 in the U.S. and I'm anxiously awaiting it to arrive. I need to find: 1) the wiring diagram and parts list for repair 2) I would like to convert the power from U.S. Standard (110 v 60 hz) to EU standards (220v 50hz). I wrote to conrad jonson for the spec...

For those of us who do not recognize EVERY piece of c-j equipment, perhaps you could post the model numbers of your pieces.

Got it; thx. 1. Output-stage powersupply, point A of the schematic: A. Looks as if c-j is already using film caps in the Main-PS CLC filter. Merely add a big (2.2/1000 for $70?) Mundorf S/O (MSO)... http://www.soniccraft.com/mundorf_silver_oil.htm ...in parallel with the 2nd main cap. B. replace th...
