Re: Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp

I did not ask Jef Fischel or anyone at CJ about this. They seem to be very busy indeed because I asked them some simple questions like: - Where can I buy that long red plastic rod to adjust my bias without the need to unscrew the whole meshcover... Over here I can't find it that's why I bothered the...

Re: Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp

To me, that says it all. You believe the variac approach is unobtrusively helping you with a problem most do not have. To you, it is sonically transparent, and who can argue? I think it is harmless, and if it really helps your other problem, or extends tube life in some way, that’s great! I would n...

Re: Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp

Hartley/Quads/Decca.. i remember that system. When I was entering into the high end systems, in the late of the 80s...one woofer, two midrange and a tweeter for each speaker. Also remember the Mark Levinson Reel to Reel tape deck playing at 30 ips., two tracks. Well, the final: your ears, your mone...

Re: Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp

All the caps in all the amplifiers are new. I know that using a Variac is a no go for many highend audio aficionados, but I never hear why. As said I do not hear any difference with or without a Variac in my AC circuit in front of the amps. I've got this idea from a friend who has been working in hi...

Re: Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp

That's the one I have (EVO 2000) and the Premier One b from CJ.
Like the Threshold S/500's they are the "offenders" ;-)

Re: Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp

Hola, What you are seen when turning the Premier on, is the power supply capacitors acting. There is no need to use a Variac. Also, the Variac is a tool for service, not an all time to power the amp. I know, it's for technicians to power up old equipment when they are uncertain about the condition ...

Re: Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp

The voltage regulator circuit should mitigate a lot of these issues. It is fairly common in the US for audiophiles to buy elaborate power line conditioners to deal with variations that they believe they can hear. Is that common in your neck of the woods too? It has not been an issue for me, but I k...

Re: Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp

MLAS, I'm a little concerned about what you describe. All things being equal, fuses typically blow faster than breakers trip. Are you sure you are not overloading the circuit that you have your equipment on? Did you replace the breaker with an equally rated fuse? Any chance that breaker was a GFCI ...

Re: Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp

Thanks for your swift answers admin & AnotherJohnson. Much appreciated. The dropping of the AC Voltage is normal when already two amps are on and then I switch on the CJ PREM One. I had the same problem with my EVO 2000 when the big open relais switched on and my AC Circuitbreakers switch of. No...

Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp

A question about powering up a tube amplifier which has no provision at all to slowstart. I have an old Premier One b amp with no slowstart provision. As I flip the switch my UPS on my PC installation (not my audio rig) goes in batterymode so much juice from the AC uses this amp that the standard Eu...

Re: Conrad Johnson Premier One b

It is nice to see people interested in the old CJ gear. Would not it be great if CJ developed a following like McIntosh has, where $400 items from 1965 are now trading for $3k to $4k? A following would be ligit because their slogan 'it just sounds right' is about right in my opinion. Their building...

Re: Conrad Johnson Premier One b

I recently dared to power my Infinity QLS's fullrange by the Premier One b alone. So with the binding-posts for low and mid/high strapped together making it a much tougher load. The Premier One b did a terrific job even at very loud soundpressure levels. I'm really amazed that this tube amp could po...

Re: CJ Evolution 2000 Amplifier for sale

Grab this amp if you still can if it is still available!
It's the best solid-state (yes I know it's a hybrid) I've ever had and still have.
Rocksolid but never harsh. Very powerfull (it drives my Infinty QLS's with ease) amplifier with superb powersupply.
Very recommended!

Re: CJ Serialnumbers logic

My CJ Evolution 2000 has its serial number also at the bottom
My CJ Evolution 20se has it serial on the back and because it is the 'se' version the second version it's third digit is also a 1 instead of a zero.

CJ Serialnumbers logic

I did some more research work and discovered a logic in the serialnumbers used by CJ. The first three digits are important: Premier One: 510, 'b' version 511 Premier Four: 520 Premier Five: 530 Premier Three: 150, 'b' version 151 (I had a 'b' one Premier Seven: 210, 'a' version 211, 'b' version 212 ...

Re: CJ Evolution 2000 Amplifier Review

The preamps I bought - 1 high-end solid state and 2 mid-high end tube - were modified with stepped attenuators, HUGE Monster Audio cables (for no reason), expensive silver Teflon solid wire, and other "audiophile" mods that were implemented horribly. I had to repair circuit board traces a...

Re: CJ Evolution 2000 Amplifier Review

Thank you. I got lucky. It looks like no work has ever been done inside the amp. The tubes were worn out GE JAN, and there are just a few scuffs on the outside of the enclosure and some scratches on the plastic window which I polished out. Amazing indeed it's so clean you could fill a brochure with...

Re: CJ Evolution 2000 Amplifier Review

I am surprised you decided to double the capacitance - can you share the make/part number? Big can caps are often difficult to source on demand; I had to wait 4 months for new production caps to be made for my ML 27, but it was much less expensive than sending it off to an ML service station for th...

Re: CJ Evolution 2000 Amplifier Review

Hi gktaudio, Nice having you with us and a very thorough review of the EVO2000. This hybrid amp brings out the best from tubes and MOSFETS for me. I've been playing around with SS gear from Levinson (ML-2's and ML-3) Threshold (S/1000's and SA/1's) Krell (KMA-200's) and Jeff Rowland (Model 7 Series ...
