Hi Roberto,
That will explain why there's no solution for it.
It emenates from the design. Premier 7 and 10 will have the same behaviour then.
Thanks for this informative post.

Re: Evolution 20 questions
These were static clicks. Couldn´t get rid of them and tried German Deoxit contactcleaner variant 'Oszillin'.
It didn´t really bother me it was a very good pre-amp which should have gotten a Premier status.

Re: Evolution 20 questions
Hola, If your speakers are very sensitive, it is normal when you go up or down with the knob. CJ uses a very careful way to bring the level up or down. It is a precision +- 0.7dB. So you can adjust precisely the level that you want to listen. Yes, I know, it is annoying...and there is no way to tak...

Re: Premier three vs Evolution 20
I've had both preamps. The Premier Three with a pair of Premier Fives and a Evolution 20se with a Evolution 2000 anx Premier One-b. The EVO 20se is better built has better parts a bigger powersupply and is a much better preamplifier than the Three which sounds euphonic if it's not broke.

Re: Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp
Mr Carlson agrees to give the tubes, valves for our man down under, a longer lifespan reduce the filament VAC (most old CJ gear runs the filament directly of the transformer 6.5V tap) my 18 tubes do, you've to lower your voltage in Continental Europe I think that went from 220 to 240VAC. In the UK t...

Re: Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp
I love that classic 80's style of brushed aluminum with a colorful band meter. Yamaha is making some new audiophile grade equipment in the same style, mainly their stereo amps ( https://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio_visual/hifi_components/index.html#d366099 ). I would love to own one just for the l...

Re: Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp
We've had a superb seemingly compression free broadcaster FIP (Paris) on our cable. That was the only broadcast I cared to listen to without commercials or idle DJ's. Basically a mix of Classical, Jazz and good Popmusic. Now our cable provider stops FM forgood and I'm not allowed by our community to...

Re: Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp
I hate when that happens. Tom Manley may have them. I’ll check. He has the outer glass for $215. http://www.mcintoshaudio.com/ Thanks. But this was years ago and I sold the Mac as is to an American. Here the FM broadcasting is all but gone. I still have a German Revox and America Spectro tuner but ...

Re: Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp
Have had the McIntosh 2105 also, a MC7270 and a black MC2500. They were no good on my Acoustat Electrostatics but it looked nice.
MR-80 tuner was brought to me by Fedex but seller forgot to disattach the panlock so the glass frontplate was completely shattered when I opened the carton...

Re: Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp
AnotherJohnson kindly pointed out their are certainly tube amps of modern make that will stop my PREM One b in it's track and leave it far behind in terms of resolution and refinement and reliability. I do not have the resources to embark on that journey as I rather drive to the horizon with a open...

Re: Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp
Letting go of something is really hard, tell me all about it! From the Premier series amplifiers to top PV series preamps, the MV series power amps, the SS amps, the LP series amps, the premier series preamps, the top of the ART's on trial, GAT/S2, the loans, the demos and the list goes on... I thi...

Re: Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp
The truth is I've been kind of lazy with it. It's heavy and cumbersome. I can't move it by myself and my wife had surgery this year and is not allowed to lift anything heavy. So if I had to ship it, I would need somebody to come over and help me pack and move it. I currently have it sitting on a mo...

Thanks Admin.
Will use a heatgun anyway.
I know you sold you EVO 2000 but do you still have CJ fullrange tube amps?

Re: Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp
Mlas, the plastic red screwdriver is made of fiberglass. I lost mine too. What I did is with a thermo-active sleeve, I isolated a metal flat screw driver, letting to have the enough tip to drive the slotted of the screw and works beautiful. Knowing that you like electronics, this could be an easy w...

Re: Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp
Not arguing. Just thinking out loud. It could be that the variac could sustain/extend life of some no longer availability parts, by reducing the transient stress of start up. It’s a point that is hard to argue against. If the goal is to curate and preserve old components, that’s cool. But I have to...

Re: Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp
So it could be even come in handy starting the Prem One B (besides the Thresholds) and first power up the auxiliary circuits like the heaters, bias and so forth and when you crank up ten VAC the B+ comes at last at full strength. I'm just expressing my gutfeelings not a scientific opinion.

Re: Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp
Thank you Uncle Doug: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3mxbewxNIM So even with a rectifier tube you can use a Variac wisely with old tube equipment. I'm not saying or extrapolating that a Variac is therefore wise the use every time you start up your audio rig but it;s at least a useful tool to compa...

Re: Using a Variac to power amp your CJ amp
Thanks.
Always great to hear from 'Down Under'.
Yes I certainly enjoy those Thresholds (34 kilogram per chassis so no wimps indeed) on the duo woofers but no good on the mid/high section of my Infinity's.
Premier One (B) is needed to let that part sing.
