Re: What a great service from Conrad Johnson...

Roberto, thanks for posting this news. I for one am very happy to hear it and hope it reflects a change in policy vs recent years past. There was a period of time, after Ed left service, that the only way of getting CJ internal parts was to send in the gear to them. best of luck in getting that PV-1...

Re: cl120se with EL-34, or KT88

Sophia Electric sells a KT88 that not only looks very pretty (300Bish) but others have attributed EL34-like qualities to it. Pricey but could be a way to get some EL34 flavor without the chassis mod needed on an SE version for EL34 use. I may buy these for my ARTsa but want to finish exploring 're-t...

Re: LP 125 Sa+ VS. CL 120SE ?

Each control varies the phase, and also varies the timbre Yes Roberto! thanks for describing aspects such as this in more detail than I was confident enough to do. Also, I think you touched on another problem with tone controls/equalizers...which is if you attempt to use them in a perfectionist man...

Re: LP 125 Sa+ VS. CL 120SE ?

Hopefully not offending anyone here, but I think it should be said that whether it is a good idea to employ tone controls or even equalizers is dependent on the type of listener, or put another way, dependent on the specific variety of audiophile you happen to be (ignoring that some don't like that ...

Re: Options For EL34 Power Tubes With Classic 120

The v1 and v2 positions on my MV55 and P11A made obvious differences and allowed for a simple way to tweak the amps character a bit in any which way presuming you kept a variety of these tubes on hand, less so with the v3 and v4 IME. I've had both those amps for a long time so plenty of playing arou...

Re: Options For EL34 Power Tubes With Classic 120

Timo, fully agree with the CJ situation as described by Big Dog - and I would go so far as to say you should try Gold Lion reissue KT77 tubes if rock is your thing. These tubes do give up a bit, but not all, of what makes EL34's so special (cozy warmth), but offer much better low end control, speed,...

Re: Which tubes for CT5 preamp? Sovtek or Electro Harmonix?

Big Dog, wow! Not what I was expecting at all! You certainly do have a fully/radically upgraded CT5... and I congratulate you on being so brave. I also really appreciate you taking the time to provide all these 'secrets' :). I don't know what I'll do with this info, but I'm certainly a believer in s...

Re: Which tubes for CT5 preamp? Sovtek or Electro Harmonix?

Welcome Artemus, congrats. I'm also a happy CT5 user with no plans to move on. I'll agree that those tubes sound different. For example the EH were not good with EL34 power tubes - too much of same qualities IMO. OTOH, they were pretty good in many areas when using KT120 power tubed amp, but felt th...

Re: Classic 60SE tube Question

Well I certainly agree that power cords impacting sound, beyond insufficient gauge for current draw, falls deep into voodoo territory for some (interconnects carry music signal so much easier to accept), But I've previously satisfied my own curiosity on this via The Cable Co who lets you take as man...

Re: Classic 60SE tube Question

Yup similar experience because I really had no idea if my speakers/room had much more low end impact to offer - but the ARTsa happily answered. Since you seem a bit of a tweaker, curious if you've played around with different power cords into your Classic 60SE amp? I haven't gone there yet but also ...

Re: Classic 60SE tube Question

Hi mgttr, congrats on your system progress. And thank you for posting some really useful info! I had been using a Gold Lion 12AU7 for the input tube, I replaced this with a NOS Brimar CV4003 (1960's British military stock) I'm still sorting thru tube options for my ARTsa, and this comment of going f...

Re: MV-55

Hi Que Jay, while I don't disagree with RJ or Roberto's comments, I'll take a slightly different stance. With smaller scale music (not super demanding of power and dynamics) you'll be hard pressed to find a replacement that is much better in conveying the simple beauty of good music. It may not be p...

Re: Sovtek 6550 vs Tung-Sol 6550 new version

Jahat, to your original point of this thread. All I can contribute is that I personally never found a 6550 that did it for me in my P11a, and never turned back after trying the KT88(which is to say I havent tried any new 6550 tubes in last 10 yrs). Gold Lion KT88s are pricey but worth it IMO. But th...

Re: Sovtek 6550 vs Tung-Sol 6550 new version

RJ, yes very interested to hear feedback on this. I may have missed it but I take it you've received some assurance that its safe to play around with the KT150's in the LP125m without adjusting the idle current? I believe your amps are very similar in architecture to the ART monos (and therefore sim...

Re: MV-52

Welcome Alnick, congrats and great find. I'll never part with my MV-55 (similar and also with EL34's) and I put it back in my system whenever I need reminded of what dragged me down this rabbit hole (audiophile hobby) in the first place - that being the qualities that Roberto mentioned above. If you...

Re: An upgrade in pre-amplification or not...

RJ, yes I really think I would like Lamm gear but unfortunately haven't had an opportunity for a serious listen, and as you mention there is a price barrier. But interesting to know that he also hording these tubes! Putting together the pieces on 6N30 tubes, I'm guessing this means older NOS Russian...

Re: An upgrade in pre-amplification or not...

So here's what else I've found since above... I spoke with TheTubeStore who I've used numerous times in the past, and who has many varieties of these tubes on hand. His opinion is that the 6N6P should not be considered a drop in replacement and he didn't have first hand experience to say much more. ...
