Re: PV-12 phono - MC?

Just to see if it would work I ran the koetsu rosewood straight into the pv12. It does work! I had to run the volume control up to around 10-11 o’clock . But, I did not care for the sound compared to using a step up transformer. Straight it was a bit thin and lacking body and dynamics. I suppose one...

Altec Lansing Model 19's

Well, I have been thru a few different sets of speakers in the last few years since relocating to Spokane. My previous Speakers , the Merlin VSM's were everything I wanted in my old house/room. But in the new space they sounded a bit papery and thin. So, I first tried a set of Klipsch Forte II , upg...

Re: PV-12 phono - MC?

Depends on the MC cartridge output. A high output MC like a dynavector 10x should be no problem. A low output MC will require a step up . I prefer transformer step up to the active circuits I have tried. I am currently using a pair of peerless /altec 4722 transformers . They really boogie , previous...

Re: PV12A "ringing" ??

Most likely the 12au7 line stage /cathode follower.
In the pv12 these are very prone to microphonics.
I am currently some 6189's Jan tubes and they sound great and very low noise/microphonics.
The rca cleartops are usually very low in microphonics but much leaner sounding.

Re: Capacitors---- HELP !!!

If you post a picture and or schematics I'm sure someone here can help you. Do you need the power supply caps or coupling caps? All of them? How far do you want to take it ?

Re: Do you like to watch 3D movies?

I find it very distracting , adds nothing good and is merely an effect . I recently saw the Hobbit in 3D and I don't know if I liked the movie or not due the distraction of the 3D effect. It does not look real at all. By the way I cannot find the Vote button .

Re: Isolation for CJ Equipment?

I am a cheap Errrr Frugal person. I used the asphaltine foil backed flashing tape from Home Despot to damping the chassis lid etc. I also had some plate glass cut and placed it on top of some Bubble wrap to stand my preamp on. works for CD players and even turntables.

Re: Tube Amp on without speakers connected?

You should not run a tube power amp with out a load. If you want disconnect the speakers and leave the amp on you should have 180-200 ohm , 20 + Watt Resistor across the + and - speaker terminals. you can leave it in place even while the speakers are connected. It will Protect the power tubes from a...

Re: Conrad Johnson PV-12 Preamp

I recently installed a nice NOS pair of French "Radio Technique" 12au7's in the line stage. So far they are holding up well, not microphonic very quiet. I am still with holding judgement about the sonic qualities. I understand they are from the French Philips factory and similar to the Amp...

Re: CJ DF-2 cd player

Unfortunately I just sold it on Ebay and got what I thought was a fair price. I will miss it as it did sound great, but I do enjoy being able to play the newer mp3 disc and more home computer disc. The DF-2 always was finicky about those. I mostly listen to vinyl anyway , a Lenco l75.

Re: tube upgrades for CJ PV 10?

I can highly recommend the Amperex Bugle Boy late 50's in the phono section. They are 3D sounding and very full as well, nothing lacking. Others I have tried and liked are Mullard ecc83 and Telefunkens. I have not tried but think would be very good are the venerable RCA 7025. If I had a pair of NOS ...

Re: Tube went bad in my PV-12

The PV12 seems a bit hard on the line stage 12au7's. I have rolled many tubes in mine over the years and the best and most reliable is the RCA Cleartop 12au7. The sound is much more detailed and refined ,deeper sound stage, great tonal balance too. The best sounding is the Amperex Bugle boy, very 3D...

Re: Crump...pwer cord

I have built a few of this formula and they do sound very good. I did not bother with the mesh outer. Only problem for me is my CJ gear all has captive cords. I know I can open them up and do a hard install , but have not done so yet. I did find that moving my PR11a power cord directly to the wall s...

CJ DF-2 cd player

Well my beloved CJ cd player has lost it's laser. It was a fine sounding cd player and I found no desire to even try another. I initially a/b'd it with several fine player and found it to be the best for my taste. However, last year it started acting out, eventually stopped reading the disc. I did s...

Re: Conrad Johnson PV-12 Preamp

I have lived with the PV12 for about 10 years and am completely satisfied with the performance. I do find that tube rolling can have significant rewards in this preamp. Currently I am using a nice pair of Late 50's Bugle Boys 12ax7 in the Phono stage, I do also like A pair of Mullards and or Telefun...
