Re: ACT2.2 distortion/pops?

The Premier 16LS used a similar sub-chassis system. You could feel the give when changing tubes. I don't remember any more whether the same held true for the Premier 17LS.

Re: Premier 12 Cover Modification

I never owned the Premier 12 instead had the Premier 11A which is usually described as the stereo version of a single Premier 12. The other CJ amp I owned was the Premier 140 which is decidedly different. My comments are based on both since the different tube types left a similar impression for both...

Re: Tubes for PV10al

I used 6189 in mine with no problems at all but never did try any 5814. My all-time favorites for my PV10AL which I bought in the 1990s and may be difficult to get nowadays were Amperex Bugle Boy 7316. Even back then they were kind of expensive but not stupid expensive as some vintage tubes are curr...

Re: Recent Website Reliability Problems

Just tried navigating to AJ's most recent posting on the Audio Research thread and got the Internal Server Error so it looks like it's still a minor issue. It cleared with a refresh.

Re: Recent Website Reliability Problems

For the past week I had been getting that error on my laptop PC/Win 11/Edge browser but I didn't know if it were me or the website. As you said hitting the refresh button cleared the problem. I just navigated to about a half dozen threads with no issues. Perhaps the problem was fixed but if it reapp...

Re: Suggestions on a preamp for CJ 2275SE amp?

The Russian tube industry exists to serve their legacy weapons system electronics. I'm sure the Russian government is a customer of New Sensor (Electro-Harmonix, Genalex, etc.). The company was founded in 1968 by Mike Matthews in New York City. According to their website https://shop.ehx.com/about/...

Re: CJ Classic 2se preamp not good with CJ 2275SE amp?

Something I don’t think we touched on here is that this ultimate volume issue is tied to speaker efficiency and room size. If the speakers have an efficiency in the 80 dB/W/m range, these high gain preamps can work well. If the speaker is 90+ dB/W/m, it will probably be less pleasing. Good point. W...

Re: Suggestions on a preamp for CJ 2275SE amp?

True, eBay is often a crap shoot and due diligence is required on the buyer's part. Good catch, AJ, I didn't even notice the discrepancy in where the seller says it was made especially in that as far as I know CJ's models have always been made in Virginia. Even with the seller's 100% feedback and 2,...

Re: Suggestions on a preamp for CJ 2275SE amp?

I owned a PV10AL which I purchased around 1994 and later (1998) had converted to a 10A by the late Bill Thalmann at Music Technology. For the time it was a nice sounding unit with the typical CJ sound for that time period. It wasn't the last word in detail but did portray a smooth and pleasant sound...

Re: ET3SE volume gain settings

I was unable to find the unity gain figure online for the ET3/ET3SE. According to a review in Stereophile the 16LS2 I owned had volume/gain resistor steps of 0.67dB. They were almost always rounded to 0.7dB in most reviews I read. Unity gain for the 16LS2 occurred at about step 67 on the volume indi...

When I got my 16LS2 they had the same Slovakia 6922 tubes in them. I thought they sounded excellent. Whoever gets these will not be disappointed.

Re: CJ HQ Audition System Upgrade

Good to see you back posting, AJ. You were missed. I've never heard the Schnerzinger cables but I did hear Zellaton speakers almost 10 years ago at the NY Audio Show. I was really impressed with their sound and that's not always the case at these shows where the room may not be suitable for the equi...

Re: Bill Thalmann

Sad news indeed. I dealt with Bill by phone in 1998 and then sent him my PV10AL preamp which he converted to a 10A by adding a phono stage. He also upgraded the RCA connectors to Cardas brand. It was a job well done and served me well for years to come. RIP.
