Re: PV12>PV11>Premier 2

IIRC the Premier 2 used a 6X4 rectifier' gave it an extraordinarily sweet sound. Modify the unit with better caps and such and I think you'd be very happy

Re: re-tubing PV 10A & MV 55

Original NOS power tubes by GE were rated at 5 to 7k hours if moderately biased. Small single tubes , like RCA red base were guaranteed for 10K hours, and many like the NOS 12AX7's can easily exceed this . The newer Chinese and Russian made products do have shorter life spans, or at least a shorter ...

Re: Breaking in a Premier 17LS

ALL CJ preamps using their "new" microprocessor control volume control with 100 steps, uses 13 resistors per side in series and parallel to create the 100 steps. Thus if you attempt break in at your normal listening level you may NOT be using all the resistors. Even moving a step above and...

Re: Breaking in a Premier 17LS

Remember that all CJ preamps with the new Volume control use a total of 13 resistors per side, in various combinations of series and parallel to create the 100 steps. If you break in the unit at one position, It may not incorporate all the resistors and sometimes changing the VC one step can kick in...

Beautiful sounding amp, once was on the Aboslute Sounds recommended list: tremendous bass punch and a sweet midrange
Too heavy for me though, as I advacne on in years.

what issues do you need to address?

The CJ is very straighforward. the only real changes needed are the electrolytic caps.

Re: CJ PV-5 Tubes

The tube selection, while a mix of brands is OK, in terms of the tube types. In the cathode follower position where the AT7's are located, you can run an AX 7 or an AU7 also. I prefer the 12AU7: not as dynamic as the AT7 but more controlled.

It all depends on your taste here.

Re: CJ PV-5 power supply caps

IIRC the PV-5 has a two section electrolytic. It is the aluminum cap early in the power supply section close to the front right side of the chassis. That one frequently leaks. Remove the cap and the factory replaces it with two smaller microfarad value Solen caps. Again IIRC, it was two 22 uF Solen ...

Re: CPU lockup problems

I've had issues with preamps locking up. A lot seem to be related to additional wireless and Wifi devices being added.
Usually a turning off of these products helps. If it does lock up, simply unplug the component for a minute and them plug back in.

Re:non shoprting caps

Non shorting caps shield the center RCA pins without incurring any issues, primarily with tape outputs which are normally live. Shorting center pin caps should never be used with ANY tape output jacks as you will short out the output signal of your preamp reducing gain. As previously stated, the fir...

Re: The six-channel MET1

AS an aside I did a head t head comparison with the MET-1 against a Meitner. The CJ simply clobbered the Meitner in my listening: better detail, superior response, far greater dimensionality. Using Ray Kimber's four channel Iso mike recordings was actually hair raising in the presentation of the var...

Re: Bad ECC82/12AU7 tube

As you noted in the other position the tube sounded OK. I would save it and carefully mark it. On the CJ preamp, one half takes the full high voltage and the other half runs at about half voltage, using the different halves of the tube. There is nothing wrong with the tube, actually, if it is noisy ...

Re: Tubes for a PV10A

Sri Lanka! Being a former Crown colony , you may ( I have no idea, never having been there, but I have met with Kavi Alexander who is from Sri Lanka) and you may have access to British NOS stock tubes. Even CJ loves the the NOS Mullards: their current obsession with the M8080, a British made militar...

Re: RCA connector caps

Not at all: RFI can enter your system and cause issues which may not be audible in an in your face way. RFI contamination often manifests itself in an edginess and sometimes even a loss in deep bass. RFI entering your system may lie far above the range of human hearing, particularly if you're like m...

Re: RCA connector caps

All rca jacks, or for that matter all jacks serve as a conduit for potential RF'. Normally you want to shield the jacks to avoid any RFI from entering your component. although with digital gear the center conuctor will often emit RFI. You can make your own RFI blockers by simply taking those el chea...

Re: Recommendations on speaker feet

As with everything audio YMMV.... I like the Black Diamond Carbon fiber cones for use on a hardwood floor. They sound very even and have slightly rounded bottoms making it very friendly to wood floors. For carpeting I like the Simply Physics plastic and aluminum cones: cheap and they were once suppo...

Re: Conrad Johnson PV-12 Preamp

It is interesting to trace the evolution of the PV series preamps. The PV 5 had one regulator a series pass unit using an MJE 340 to feed the entire B+ chain. Later PV series preamps add additional stages of regulators again feeding the entire B+ chain. The PV 8 had one main regulator and two supple...

Re: Isolation for CJ Equipment?

In regards to the plexi glass covers I made: Simply took off the old covers and measured them and went down to my local plexi supplier and had them cut to size. If you hold the original against the plexi cover, you can trace out the mounting holes to make an exact fit. If no supplier, You can cut th...
