Re: Repairs and/or modifications to C-J products

AJ--thanks for the tips. Sure enough, your XS mod show the original P11 schematics (no "Rev: A"). So here's what I found. The Bias LED circuit is driven by an LF353 op amp. (This would be in a DIP integrated circuit, so, there are two such op amps per IC.) Pins 3 and 5 are connected to ground throug...

Re: Repairs and/or modifications to C-J products

I don't see the 11 to 11A upgrade being as important, but it does make me wonder if the slight noise I am hearing is a result of that. If I remember the details, the noise came from the driver circuitry for the bias LEDs. And supposedly that same upgrade also made the LEDs a little less finicky. Bu...

Re: Repairs and/or modifications to C-J products

I think even someone in our local audio club has put an IEC jack into a chassis, so I may defer to their expertise if needed. (We have a few DIYers among us.) The chassis on this 11 is certainly thicker than others I have worked with in the past (mainly, project boxes from the electronics stores). I...

Re: Premier 11 and impedance

Forgot to say "Thanks" on your post! I agree--opening it up to check the wiring is the best way to check impedance. I think I downloaded that wiring schematic a year or two before getting my Premier 11, in fact. ;)

Repairs and/or modifications to C-J products

As my signature shows, I have a Premier 11 on hand. I have had it for several months now and we get along nicely. It does not quite drive my Vandersteen 2CE as well as the Nelson Pass designed amp I had previously, but the Vandys are also not my long-range goal. My dilemma, though. The 11 came with ...

Re: The Formidable Renaissance 15

Interesting to read impressions on the Ren 15 here. A little tale, if I may... AXPONA 2016 had one room featuring the Ren 15s, as they were a new model. They sounded nice and all that, but I was slightly disappointed. I've been a fan of planar speakers since I first heard the CLS II back in 1987. I ...

Re: ART 150/300 Anniversary Amplifiers

I think part of the problem with KT150s is that they are a newer tube, and many manufacturers do not yet have a grasp on what to do with them. C-J was able to harness that tube's unique properties in these newest ART amplifiers to great effect, but others might not. It has also been said that power ...

Re: Where do you buy your tubes? From Conrad Johnson or ....

I could have shopped around the set I bought for the Premier 11, but I figured that Kevin and one of his employees had helped me with a few questions, so I had no problem giving them the business this time. Wish I could have found a NOS 5751 pair, but the new production tubes are well reviewed, and ...

Re: Where do you buy your tubes? From Conrad Johnson or ....

I should add: I ordered a full set of tubes for my Premier 11 from Upscale Audio about a month ago. I asked about the 5751, and they recommended *not* using anything else in its place (like a 12AX7), and also mentioned they had no NOS options available for that tube. But, I did get the Brimar 6CG7/6...

Premier 11 and impedance

I may have a dilemma to work through. I picked up a Premier 11 just over a week ago and have been getting used to it. I have a complete new set of tubes coming from Upscale Audio, as the tubes are of unknown age (I am the third owner--the second owner bought it from a friend but had no idea about th...

Re: Anyone running CJ pre with non-CJ SS amp?

I've had a change in my system since my last post in this thread--I am now using a Premier 11 power amp with the PV-14L. Given that Nelson Pass's design of the PA-7 had what might be called "tube-like" qualities to it, there is less of a difference between the PA-7 and the Premier 11 than you'd thin...

Re: ART 150/300 Anniversary Amplifiers

It is interesting to see C-J use the new KT-150 tubes. I only saw a couple of amps at AXPONA use these, but there were many using the KT-120. I would trust C-J to get this "right" and voice the new tubes to sound like their other amplifiers. A 300 watt monoblock. Hmmm...what I could do with that pow...

Re: Premier 11 / KT120 tubes

Some locals and I were just talking about this at AXPONA--a metal punch that would accurately cut out the opening for an IEC connector. On the Premier 11, there is enough room for one, but not much room to work with on either side since it is so close to the edge of the rear panel. I also wonder if ...

Re: Premier 11 / KT120 tubes

Additional question--has anyone ever adapted a C-J power amp with an IEC power cable input? The cable on this amp has a spot with electrical tape on it to cover some damaged insulation (not to bare wire though), so a future project might be to replace the cable, or adapt it for IEC so I could plug i...

Premier 11 / KT120 tubes

I landed a Premier 11 today (not the 11A), at quite a good price. I gave it a good cleaning, touched up a few small nicks in the black paint, and polished the gold top and front panels. It's looking pretty much like new! The tubes are of unknown age and origin--three of the four 6550s are missing th...

Re: CJ premier 11A tubes

Do the 12AX7 have too much gain to use in the 11A? Only because I can find a lot more replacement options for those, vs. the 5751.

Re: Where did you hear about Conrad Johnson Owners.com?

Since the poll is closed...I believe I found it via a Google search, looking for information on a specific preamp model (back when I was considering different C-J preamps). I have no issues mentioning this forum elsewhere. I run a few myself, and certainly appreciate any mention anyone can give foru...

Re: Premier 11A mods

I wonder if there is a schematic out there of the Premier 11 as opposed to the 11A, as that would make it possible to find out exactly what is different about the biasing circuitry. I have a line on an 11 that is very nicely priced, but in a way I don't want anything that might be compromised. Havin...

Re: Metalwork for C-J power amplifiers

I wonder if anyone makes reproduction metalwork for components. I could see it being a handy service, as I am sure there are others out there who might want to freshen up a used component. CNC machining could cut a nearly exact replica of the original, and after that it would only be a matter of las...
